about us

To the Earth is a loose collective of dancers and musicians based in Richmond, Virginia since 2005. We were happy to be the city’s first tribal bellydance and live music group and thrilled to watch this dance grow over the past several years.

We view bellydance as a collaborative art form and celebration of diversity. To the Earth supports and loves the LGBTQIA community as well as other local awareness and activist groups.

The heart of To the Earth today is something we call Theatrical Tribal Style – we use a mix of improvised and choreographed fusion bellydance forms to tell stories with our dance. Our art is grounded in American Tribal Style®, influenced by the partner dances of Balla Guerra, and borrowed from everything we see.

Today we’re 53% Die Coughlin & April Johnson, 27% Stan and Xavi, and 20% all the wonderful people we’ve performed with in the past year or so – Tara Courtland, Lar Sherman (of Balkanize!), Dawn Layne, Katrina Kiefer, Brett Zwerdling (of Maharal), Dave Coughlin, Kevin Finity and Shy Barkdull.
