got
questions?
You're welcome to email us questions about class - we love hearing from students and prospective students.
We've also collected several common questions
for those new to our classes, our style, or bellydance in general.
What to
wear to class? Yoga pants and a comfortable, close-fitting
top are ideal, but anything you can move in is great. In advanced classes,
a choli and 10-yard tiered skirt may help you get in the mood, but aren't required.
Bring a (non-jingling) hip scarf to emphasize your movement.
Where
is class exactly? We meet in the Skylight Gallery at Art
Works. Depending on when your class starts, you may need to use the
artist's entrance to the building on Hull St (not the main entrance on
4th). We'll be waiting to let you in - if you're late, call 804-307-6943 & we'll come get you.
Can I drop in on class? Can I watch?
Some classes are designed to allow drop-ins. For the comfort of our
students, we generally do not allow observers. You may occasionally
bring a friend or child to the gallery, but they should be outside the
classroom.
What class should I take?
Our format is based on Fat Chance Bellydance's American Tribal Style.
If you don't have have experience with ATS (even if you do know other
dance styles), start with the Fundamentals class. If in doubt, start with Fundamentals.
Is class okay for men? For people my age or size? For people with disabilities? We
aim to make dance as accessible as possible. People of any mature(ish) age, ability
or gender should be comfortable in class. If you have needs we may not have anticipated,
just contact us before class to work with you.
What about kids? We welcome students 14 and over, though anyone under 18 needs a
guardian's permission to attend. Kids younger than that should come as drop-ins first to test if class is a good fit for them.
What kind of music can I practice with? Check out these
music ideas - music suggestions for students' practice, including things we
play in class & perform to.
What will I learn, exactly? We have sample class plans posted on our
student info page - we teach both group improvisational skills (so you can dance together right away) and specific steps at all levels of class.
Where do I find costumes? Other teachers? Places to see dance? Visit the sites on our
links page for local and national resources. You can also ask in class for more recommendations.
I'm far away. Do you do workshops?Dvora and April both teach our American Tribal Style-driven bellydance
form, and are available for workshops (we prefer to teach together
– we call it “tribal style teaching”). Topics we can teach include:
Tribal (ATS-inspired) Fundamentals, Tribal for Soloists, Conditioning and Mobility for Dancers,
Costuming and History for Tribal & Fusion, and specific topics (i.e. slow vs. fast movements,
troupe coaching, etc.). To find out
more, please contact askus@totheearth.com.
